President Olusegun Obasanjo is to get more powers in controlling the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation if the National Assembly passes the NNPC (Amendment) bill, 2006, before it.
Senator Lawal Shuaibu sponsored the bill, which has been listed for publication in the National Assembly journal.
The President currently doubles as the minister of petroleum resources.
The bill seeks for amendment to the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Act, 1977.
Under it, Section 2 of the principal Act, which empowers the NNPC's board of directors to appoint the board chairman, has been given to the President.
The President is also empowered under the amendment bill, to appoint the managing director of the corporation.
