Nigeria's spate of pre-election violence has claimed another victim as political aspirant Funsho Williams was on Thursday stabbed to death in his home in the capital Lagos.

Nigeria's spate of pre-election violence continues to rise as a front-runner for the governor's office in Lagos state under the country's ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) was assassinated this morning.

Funsho Williams - a qualified engineer - was killed this morning by an unidentified man who stormed his Lagos home and stabbed him to death.

Details on the attack aree still sketchy but Muyiwa Collins, the Publicity Secretary of PDP has confirmed the incident.

Collins said the government and security agents are already on the trail of the assassins.

Williams, a former Commissioner for Works in Lagos State under the tenure of Military Administrator, Gen Buba Marwa, had contested the state governorship election in 1999 and 2003, and lost in both attempts.

He was again preparing for the 2007 governorship election in the state before his murder.

A host of candidates have indicated their ambition to contest for the strategic office of governor of Lagos State on the platform of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), including Adeseye Ogunlewe, Nigeria's former Public Works Minister.
