Devil tricks guard to jail

A security guard, who called himself a born again Christian has been held by the police in Lagos for organising the robbery of his employer's company, where products worth over N3 million were stolen.

Dominic Ikechukwu Onicheta, 32, said he was a born again christian before temptation led him to steal from the very hand that had been feeding him. He admitted to have plotted the burglary to its conclusive end.

'God has shown me mercy! I've been recalled into the fold since my arrest. I beg God and my employer to forgive me. If I come out of this problem I will focus fully on God's ministry, which he had always called me to do."
Onicheta told Daily Sun that it was accommodation problem that pushed him into dining with the devil.

He said he was sick and tired of staying with his fiancée's sister who had been making life unbearable for him. He thought the only way to end it all was to have enough money to rent his own apartment. He said as the thought filtered into his mind, he knew he needed someone to assist and make the plan succeed. He contracted one Ikechukwu who he got to know at the Alaba international market in Ojo.

He said: ' It was on December 26 that IK came with two men. I've never seen their faces before. They broke into the warehouse where I worked and went away with five electrical pumping machines. IK promised to give me N75,000. He left and till date the policemen and I have not seen him. We've tried the number he gave me several times but he kept dribbling me."

Onicheta said he was returning one day from making another futile call to Ikechukwu to demand his share when detectives came and bundled him to the station.
Onicheta apparently thought he was off police suspicion when, after the burglary was discovered, nobody bothered to ask him anything. Detectives, however, were said to have later discovered that the 'man of God" was not supposed to be on duty on that December 26.

He was said to have convinced his colleague to go and have a swell time with his family, that he would stand in for him.
It would have been a solid plan with the other security guard being the fall guy, but Onicheta never bargained for detectives' thorough investigations. He said:

' There was nobody around that day. Every one had gone for the holiday. Management had the keys to the main gate. It was only the small gate for security that was left. I was the only security man around. IK and the men came at about 2pm. They came in an ash coloured passat wagon. They broke into the warehouse and also broke the lock of the main gate to carry the items."
Onicheta thought he could fast-talk his way out of the mess and probably land his colleague in trouble, but Daily Sun gathered that under the intense heat of interrogation, he caved in and spilled the bean.

Onicheta, who was receiving N9,000 salary, said he could have saved to rent an apartment but he was heavily under pressure. He explained that after his fiancée went to Abuja to secure an appointment, her kid sister had asked him to leave. The girl allegedly sublet her room to him, and promised to hand over the place to him last August when she expected to get married. 'But August came and went with the wind. She later said November till, she didn't marry. Instead, she started giving me problems. There were four of them staying there with me," said Onicheta.
Onicheta has not only lost his job, but also his lover. Also he carries the cross of the robbery alone as Ikechukwu is still at large.
