A group, Akwa Ibom Youth Front, has described the declaraction of a former chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, Chief Don Etiebet, to contest the governorship seat of Akwa Ibom State as demeaning and unnecessary.

In a two-page statement by the National Coordinator of the group, Mr. William Edet William and his assistant, Mr. Emeofon Udeme, it expressed dissapointment that Etiebet could vie for the seat.

The group noted that a man of his calibre, who had been the national chairman of a party, a Petroleum minister and a presidential candidate should not aspire to be a governor.

It stated, 'We are sure that the likes of Alex Ekwueme and the rest of your contemporaries will be disappointed to hear that you have descended so low to seek the office of the governor.

'We are sure the likes of Tony Anenih, Olusola Saraki, Solomon Lar or Ekwueme cannot seek to become governors in their respective states."

The group stated that it was wrong for Etiebet to have created the impression that the people of the state urged him to contest.

It said, 'Let us inform you, that you were wrong to claim in the letter that you have the mandate of the Akwa Ibom State People to seek the office of the governor in the state."

The group, however, called on the former ANPP chairman not to dare the long suffering people of the state by presenting himself to be elected as governor.

According to the statement, it said it was surprising that Etiebet could yield to pressure from people who might be plotting his downfal.
