Abuja - Senators Farouk Bello and Sani Sanmi have condemned the planned purge of the Federal Civil Service with Bello insisting that it would twist the intentions of the ongoing public service reforms of the federal government.

'A reform that is depriving people of their sources of livelihood is a deformation,'' Senator Bello, a critic of federal government economic policies told Vanguard.
Senator Sanmi (ANPP, Kebbi South) in the same vein said that the purge could also have social consequences as he warned that the purge of at least 33,000 civil servants could exacerbate the rate of robbery in society.

Warning that the mass purge could provoke an unprecedented social shock that could compound the security situation in the land, Senator Bello urged the administration to first prepare the private sector to absorb the redundant government employees before embarking on the layoff.
Already, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has equally appealed for a restraint on the fact that a mass sack could aggravate the state of insecurity.

'If you retrench 33,000 you would be affecting almost 100,000 lives, maybe you will turn them to armed robbers. If you have a wife and four children and you pay school fees, by the time you retrench, what will they do and the pension is not forthcoming,'' Senator Sanmi said.
In his own reaction to the plan, Senator Bello said: 'It is only in Nigeria that an economy is claimed to be growing and people are losing jobs in mass numbers.
