The Skills Acquisition Programme of The Adolescent Project (TAP) in Rivers State was a deliberate intervention strategy designed to bridge the gap between the less privileged and the privileged among women and youths.
Justice Mary Odili, wife of the governor of Rivers State and the initiator of The Adolescent Project (TAP) said this at the graduation ceremony of skills acquisition training programme for Bayelsa indigenes in Rivers State at the TAP permanent site at Iriebe in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, over the weekend.
Justice Odili said, her objective was to continue to equip beneficiaries who were more susceptible to social vices associated with idleness and poverty with skills to make them useful to themselves and the society.
She said, the successful completion of the skills acquisition programme for Bayelsa indigenes resident in Rivers State was a clear demonstration of the bond of unity and brotherliness existing among the people of both states.
The wife of the governor said, 'this act and other people-oriented programmes would continue to be pursued to further strengthen the existing relationship and foster the much needed development for the people.
Justice Odili said, a total of 891 graduands acquired knowledge in various skills including, sewing, hairdressing, tye and dye, barbing, catering, bead stringing and video coverage.
She said that the training was expected to positively impact on the society through improved livelihood for the graduands, their families, friends and associates.
In her speech at the occasion, the wife of the Governor of Bayelsa State, Mrs Patience Jonathan, who also graced the occasion with the wife of the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Mrs Ebebi, among other dignitaries, commended Justice Odili for her enviable leadership role as a mother in the state.
Mrs Jonathan also thanked Rivers State Governor, Dr. Peter Odili for extending kind-heartedness to Bayelsans in the State by providing for them a source of livelihood.
Mrs Jonathan, who said, she would incorporate the beneficiaries into her pet project, The A. Aruara Foundation, urged them to be a pride to Bayelsans and to Rivers people.
She pointed out that Justice Odili, besides teaching Bayelsans skill acquisition, had also trained them on traditional birth attendance, and prayed God to bless Governor Peter Odili and his wife, Justice Mary Odili.
Lady Hannah Agumah, an elder stateswoman, and the chairman of the occasion, described Mrs Odili as a woman full of vision, and commended her for lifting humanity.
In their various addresses, the Matron of Bayelsa Community, Mrs Pelebo Banigo and Mrs Mary Belemo Allagoa, the co-ordinator of the programme, commended Mrs Odili for the development and transformation of the state through her people-oriented programme.
