Miffed by the pathetic sight of the collapsed building and victims being evacuated at the time he visited the site along with some other state officials, Lagos State governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday promised to get the developer and the owner of the property arrested.
Tinubu, who joined the rescue operation at the time of his visit, ordered security agents to go after the contractor, who handled the construction of the building, with the view to arresting and prosecuting him.
He accused the private developer of doing a shoddy job in the course of constructing the building, promising that he would not go free for wasting the lives of innocent citizens.
The governor appealed to agitated residents of the area and sympathizers who gathered at the scene to remain calm, for rescue operations go on unhindered.
Speaking in the same vein, the state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr Bolaji Abosede, said the rate at which buildings collapse in the metropolis had made it inevitable for the state government to establish a body of professionals that would monitor the construction of buildings from the foundation to the finishing point.
He said the body would consist of engineers, builders, architects and other relevant professionals who would assist the state government to monitor property development to ensure that substandard materials were not used by property developers.
