AWKA - CHAIRMAN of the PDP faction loyal to former Governor Chris Ngige of Anambra State, Chief Ifeatu Obi-Okoye weekend escaped death in the hands of assassins in his Enugu residence.
According to Obi-Okoye, six people came in three motorcycles and encountered his security men. He said that what convinced him that they were after him was that the people told his security men that they needed 'Mr. Obi-Okoye, and tell him he is in trouble".
He said they shot into the air before they left perhaps not knowing that Obi-Okoye himself was inside the house.
Obi-Okoye who said he has since reported the matter to the police in Enugu narrated his ordeal.
'On Friday afternoon I came back from a trip to Abuja, and drove to my office at Ogui, (Enugu), from there I drove to my house. As soon as I came into my house to park, because there were two vehicles. I was in my jeep in front and my security personnel were in the Mercedes that followed me behind. We had all moved into the compound then the gate shut at around 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Then suddenly just as we were un-parking my things to get into the house there was altercation at the gate, about 50 metres from the main house.
'Then there were gun shots. Then my security people rushed to the gate just as they were getting to the gate, three boys were jumping on top of an Okada and zoomed off".
'Later we now tried to find out from the gate man what happened. He said that as soon as we moved in the three Okada carrying three people arrived at the gate. Two of them brought out pistols; he said it was a shiny pistol. They said where is Chief? And the gate man said who is chief. They said the two vehicles that came in now and he replied that no two vehicles came in now.
''They said Mr. Obi-Okoye and at that point he said that there is no Mr. Obi Okoye and at that point they shot and one of them looked through the gate and saw my security boys rushing to the gate and they jumped on top of the Okada and ran. As they were going they told my gate man that he should tell him he is in trouble, we will get him, and warn him because we will come back,".
He alleged that his political opponents were behind the alleged plan to kill him.
'I was arrested by the police in Awka and detained for a night and about two weeks after that, there was an attack on my vehicle but fortunately or unfortunately I was not in the vehicle, just my driver. But the vehicle was tinted so there was no way they could identify who was driving. But the usual thing is that everybody that knows me knows that I drive sometimes alone and I don't have anybody in my vehicle so who ever attacked my vehicle at that time felt that I was the person driving the vehicle. And it was after that fresh incident that I got some security men to be attached to me which apparently they didn't know were around me".
He linked his ordeal to what Ngige's former aide, Chief Timothy Egboka is facing.
'The likes of him, the likes of me and a few of us know and work with them and we know how to stop them and I will not be surprised when these attacks come on our way. But one thing I know is that I share the same philosophy with Shakespeare about death. So things like that don't worry me and my personal conviction is that it is God almighty that gives life and takes it".
'What I think also is that the surprises of political opponent, despite the absence of Dr. Chris Ngige from there we have been able to do maintain the machinery and sustain it. They thought that in his absence the machinery will crumble and that is what has given rise to the attack on my person. But they know they cannot intimidate me", Obi-Okoye said.
