The Directorate of Pilgrims Affairs (DPA) has proposed to the Federal Government that intending pilgrims to the 2006/2007 hajj should pay $1,200 as air fare.
Information Officer of the directorate, Alhaji Umar Bala, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Tuesday that the air fare was raised from $900 to $1,200 dollars to take care of any unanticipated increase in aviation fuel.
``The decision is based on the bitter experience we had in the past, especially this year when about 12,000 Nigerians could not perform the hajj,‘‘ he said.
Bala, however, said the total package to be paid by each intending pilgrim would not be known ``until we know the exchange rate of the naira to the dollar.‘‘
