Uneasy calm pervaded the police force headquarters in Abuja Tuesday as the presidency on Monday, requested all Deputy Inspectors General of Police[DIGs] to forward their credentials for screening.

The directive kick-starts the selection process for a substantive Inspector General of Police, as out-going IGP, Mr. Tafa Balogun's notice of retirement expiresby March 5, 2005.
Although Sunday Ehindero, the most senior among the six DIGs has since been appointed IGP in an acting capacity, the Police Council has not met to deliberate to either confirm his appointment or pick another officer.

Daily Sun however, gathered that the impending screening has sparked off tension at the police force headquarters, just as the DIGs have commenced intense lobby for the juicy position.

It was further learnt that the screening exercise is expected to commence before the end of this week, after which the presidency would hold consultations, before the Police Council meets to ratify whatever decision reached.

Police Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emmanuel Ighodalo could not be reached for comments as at press time, as he was said to be busy with the Acting IGP when Daily Sun called at his office, but a top police officer who pleaded anonymity, confirmed the development.
