In its determination to adequately train personnel in the major facets of the tourism sector, the Cross River State government has mapped out plans to collaborate with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) in training the state accounting officers in that regard.
Receiving a delegation of the Institute led by its president, Dr. (Mrs) Kate Okpareke, in his office in Calabar, Governor Donald Duke, said the effort was to ensure that operators of tourism in the state were highly trained in all aspects of tourism management.
Duke also said that besides the tourism personnel, government would further partner with ICAN to ensure that people who are currently performing accounting duties in the state, but are not formally trained accountants were given basic training in accounting principles by the body.
He noted that the role of ICAN in the development and sustainability of accountability and data keeping cannot be over-stressed, adding that, the government had been supportive of the institute and also employed a number of its members.
The governor, however, congratulated the new ICAN president for her electoral success, hoping that her tenure would bring more glories and honours to the professions and the country.
He said that his administration was desired to make the state the most preferred tourism destination in West Africa by 2010.
Earlier, Mr. Okpareke had stated that ICAN which was established as a professional body by an Act of Parliament No 15 of 1965 has trained over 20,000 professionals in its 40 years of existence.
She stated that during her one year tenure, she intends to create more opportunities for Nigerians to register, write and pass their ICAN examinations, pointing out that, with the envisaged support from the state government in terms of accommodation and logistics, training centre would be opened to train students and prepare them for their various professional steps in ICAN examination.
In an interaction with media at the end of the state visit, the ICAN president said she intends to establish Student Special Project (SSP) in all the six geo-political zones in the country. She also used the opportunity to announce the ICAN conference scheduled to start July 27 through 29 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
