A community leader in Lagos State says if equity and fairness are to be applied in the choice of who succeeds President Olusegun Obasanjo, the South-South geo-political zone deserves to take the next shot at Nigeriaís presidency.

Reacting to the debate over who should be Obasanjoís successor come 2007, the community leader, Prince Oluranti Ademola Olufon said the South-South zone is the only zone that has not tasted the highest office in the country going by the political history of Nigeria.

ďApart from the South-South, all the other five zones have at one time or the other occupied the office and there is then no reasonable justification to deny the zone this time around,Ē Olufon told journalists at Ikeja, Lagos, arguing that the issue of Obasanjo's successor should not be reduced to the vagaries of politics.

Prince Olufon who is the chairman of Ikeja Community Development Committee (CDC)however cautioned his Yoruba folks against playing politics with who becomes the next president, drawing attention of the Yorubas on the need for them to support a just cause judging from what they passed through in the past.

He said it would be an unfortunate event if the people of South-South would fold their hands and allow the North that has ruled the country for over 30 years to take the leadership mantle again in 2007 when President Obasanjo bows out.

The community leader described as nonsensical the so-called agreement to return power to the North at the end of Obasanjoís tenure.
