At last, the Bureau for Public Enterprises (BPE) yesterday formally handed over the multi-million naira Nigeria Airways property at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, to the buyer, Arik Airlines.
The airline had last year, bidded and successfully bought the Nigeria Airways headquarters and had been waiting for a formal hand over as it is done in other privatization exercises.
The event was witnessed by the BPE Director General, Dr Irene Chigbue and the Nigerian Airways liquidator, Babington Ashaye.
Part of what Arik Airlines will acquire includes a warehouse stocked with useful aircraft spareparts valued at over 2 million dollars, a big hangar, massive administrative block, tyre remoulding workshop, a big maintenance base, among others.
Daily Sun sources hinted that Arik Airlines is willing to absorb some workers of the defunct national carrier since most of them have remained redundant since the liquidation.
The sources further disclosed that the airline has commenced the recruitment of cabin crew and other operational staff who will start full operations once the renovation work on the complex is completed.
