Taiwo has disclosed he was close to sealing the move from Marseille to Spanish club, Valencia. The Che are looking to plug the hole left by the departure of Fabio Aurelio to Liverpool and it would appear Taiwo is their chosen target.

"As I talk to you, officials of Valencia are already in France to discuss my release.

It's a good development to my young career as it will afford me the opportunity to acquire some knowledge about the Spanish league and get more exposure in the glamorous UEFA Champions League," Taiwo told Kick Off.

Meanwhile, the efforts of Super Eagles duo Wilson Oruma and Taye Taiwo were not enough as Olympique de Marseille played barren home draw against visitors, Dniepropetrovsk in their third round of the Intertoto Cup at the Stade Parsemain at the weekend.

The Nigerian internationals were on parade in the encounter Marseille dominated at all the departments but failed to beat the Ukraine side despite hitting the woodwork twice.
Although Marseille coach, Abert Emon, was pleased by his side's performance, particularly the solidity in defence, he admitted that they had to pick an outright victory to qualify for the prestigious UEFA Cup tournament.

"We knew the first competitive match of the season wouldn't be easy. But we started very well in the first half and were very solid in the second. We should especially be satisfied with our defence, even if there are still certain things to address.

'It's not yet perfect. I think we deserved the goal that would have put us in a more comfortable position, but the woodwork wasn't on our side. However, it does show that the players really tried, they gave it everything. Maybe we'll be smiling more at the end of the return leg."
