Longman Nigeria Plc, one of the foremost publishing houses in Nigeria for primary and secondary school textbooks has said it has completed work on it computer appreciation textbook, Log on to it for junior secondary schools. Also completed by the publishing house is the larger format edition of the New Practical English Series written by Mrs. Phebean Ogundipe.

Mr. Emmanuel Ijewere, chairman of the company who disclosed this at the 33rd annual general meeting of the company held recently in Lagos said that the 2005 operating year was particularly a fruitful one for the company. Ijewere added that while the company is consolidating the new courses completed at primary level by the provision of pupils textbooks and teachers guides, it has progressed the revision of its core courses at the secondary level.

The company, he also said, is moving strongly into the pre-primary and tertiary sectors with Penguin s Ladybird series and the vast range of Pearson Education tertiary titles.

Ijewere said the company in the year under review intensified its marketing activities across all categories of schools and State Universal Basic Education Board (Subeb) in the federation in order to take full advantage of government s commitment to full implementation of the UBE programme.

He announced that the operating results of the company in 2005 show an outstanding performance in comparison with the previous year s results. According to him, "Turnover grew by 24 per cent to N1.304 billion over sales of N1.052 billion achieved in 2004. This rise was driven by substantial volume growth of our lead titles at both primary and secondary levels."

He added that operating profit before tax (PBT) of N173.39 million was achieved. This, he said, represents an increase of N61.5 million or 55 per cent over the operating profit of N111.89 million in 2004. The company would pay N44.10 million to its shareholders as dividend.
