Nigeria loses 84 buildings, 400 lives to building collapse

A total of 84 buildings have collapsed in Nigeria within the past two decades, the Public Relation Officer of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) Sir Wisdom Okoro has said.

He made this known during an exclusive interview with The Tide at Aba, Abia State last week.

Okoro also said that over 400 lives have been lost to incidence of building collapse in the country between 1971 and March 2006.

He stated that the first incidence of building collapse was experienced in Nigeria when a residential storey building in Makoba, in Ibadon Oyo State collapsed killing 27 persons.

Okoro referred to the collapse of a three storey building in the federal capital territory (FCT) as the most recent case of building collapse in the country.

He explained that 400 represents the precise figure of officially reported cases of building collapse in the country, and pointed out that there may be other cases not reported to the authorities.

However, Sir Okoro who is a public relation officer of NIOB said that properties valued over five billion naira have been lost to incidence of building collapse in Nigeria within the period under review.

He stated that the common cause of building collapse incidence in the country is structural failures as a result of the engagement of unqualified professionals in building construction.

Okore used the forum to commiserate with the families that lost their relations and loved ones in building collapse incidence, and noted that most of the buildings that collapsed were still under construction.
