Public Sector Reforms Can't be Reversed After 2007, Says Obasanjo

President Olusegun Obasanjo said that he would ensure that all public sector reforms embarked upon by his administration are not be stopped by any in-coming administration.

The President who emphasised that the reforms would be implemented "to the point of irreversibility", added that "we do not want the reforms to be reversed. We will take them to the point of irreversibility".
Speaking at the conclusion of a briefing by the Minister of Health, Professor Eyitayo Lambo, yesterday, he also said that he was prepared to extend the subsisting contracts for the rehabilitation and supply of state-of-the-art equipment to all Federal Teaching Hospitals and specialist hospitals in the country.

He however, stresses that the proposal for the project extension must meet all the requirements of due process, competitiveness, transparency and fair play.

The President had also at a similar briefing by the Minister of Science and Technology , Professor Turner Isoun, yesterday, directed that urgent action be taken to make research institutes and parastatals under the Ministry more cost-efficient and result-oriented.

He said that for the country to really develop technologically, concerted effort must be made to integrate theory with practical knowledge in its training institutions.

The President also directed that steps be taken to sustain the tempo of governmental action which has led to decline in the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the country.
President Obasanjo, while calling for increased action towards the eradication of polio and guinea worm from Nigeria, thanked the Minister of Health and his team for the briefing that also involved parastatals in the Health Ministry.
