No fewer than 31 students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, who belonged to different secret cult groups have renounced their membership, as the school authorities intensified efforts to rid the University of the menace of cultists.
The Univeristy had last week given the students one week to renounce their memebrship or face disciplinary measures.
In a statement, the Public Relations Officer of the Enugu Campus of the University, Mr Godwin Onah said those who have renounced their membership did so during a prayer session organised in the school to condemn cultism in the University.
Onah said the cultists announced their withdrawal from the groups before 4,000 members of the University community, including the Catholic Chaplain, Reverend Father Chima Nwamadi.
Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Peter Ebigbo, said he was overwhelmed by the development, and urged students not to join groups that would dampen their future.
Ebigbo said there were no advantages in belonging to either cult or other groups that threaten security, and suggested membership of other responsible clubs which could help them develop both intellect, talent and leadership qualities.

He expressed joy that the reform agenda of the University was yielding dividends and commended the students for embracing the Harmony Restoration Movement introduced by the school .
