Govt assures on Nigerians' safety in Bakassi
President Olusegun Obasanjo said on Wednesday in Abuja that the welfare and well-being of the people of the Bakassi Peninsula, rather than its mineral resources, have always been his primary concern in negotiations on the status of the territory.
Speaking during a meeting at the Presidential Villa with a delegation led by the Chairman of the Bakassi Local Government Area, Hon. Ani Eric Esin, President Obasanjo reaffirmed his administration's total commitment to the proper resettlement of all Nigerian citizens who choose to leave the Peninsula following its being ceded to Cameroun.
The President also pledged that Nigerians who choose to continue living in the Peninsula under Camerounian administration will keep on receiving full protection from the Federal Government.
In furtherance of this commitment, the President announced that the Minister of Housing, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko and his Special Assistant on Migration and Humanitarian Affairs, Mrs. Moremi Soyinka-Onijala will join others on the Bakassi Resettlement Committee which had been established to co-ordinate all aspects of the relocation of Nigerians who want to leave the Peninsula.
President Obasanjo told the delegation that personal feelings and sentiments notwithstanding, Nigeria was, as a country under the rule of law and a responsible member of the international community, bound by the ruling of the International Court of Justice on the status of the Bakassi Peninsula and must therefore abide by the terms of its recent agreement with Cameroun in New York.
