LAGOS - DETAINED former Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen Ishaya Bamaiyi, has reportedly slumped and gone into coma.
He was moved from the Kirikiri maximum prison, Lagos to Lagos University Teaching Hospital, about 10 weeks ago.
His condition suddenly worsened weekend prompting his transfer from Ward E5 of the hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Vanguard gathered that he is suffering from Transient Ischaemic attack. This according to a medical source 'could progress to Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA)with paralysis of one side of the body. This could also lead to a coma. Actually his case needs expert attention."
His lawyer, Mr Wahab Shittu said he was yet to be briefed on his health condition.
Bamaiyi has been standing trial for over seven years now over alleged attempted murder of The Guardian publisher, Mr Alex Ibru in 1996, alongside Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, ex Lagos Police boss, Mr James Danbaba, ex Zamfara military administrator, Col. Jubrin Bala Yakubu and CSP Rabo Lawal.
Considering that his trial and detention is unduly long, Bamaiyi recently applied for a separate trial before Justice Joseph Oyewole of the Ikeja High Court, he however failed in his attempt for separate trial. It could be recalled that he was moved to LUTH mid-March when it was reported that his condition was deteriorating and has been kept at the hospital receiving treatment.
