* Robbers riddle vehicles, buildings with bullets over failed operation at bank
Residents of Hospital Road and Ndoki Estate in Port Harcourt recently had a feel of robbers' fury when a branch of a bank was raided.
Incidentally, this was the second robbery, in a month at the bank. That May 20, the hapless residents, scared by exchange of gun fire between the police and robbers, wished the earth could split open and conceal them from the fury of the evil men.
'When the shooting continued for some time, I peeped from our window and saw two of them demonstrating as if they were entertaining themselves. At a time, the whole place became charged and my people and I were so frightened that we wished we had a better place to hide", said a young man who refused to identify himself.
He recalled that the usual silence of the wee hours of the morning was shattered that Saturday by the sporadic gunshots and explosion of dynamites even as walls were riddled with bullets. At the end of the gun duel, vehicles and walls were riddled with bullets.
Among the vehicles affected was a white Jeep belonging to Senator Lee Maeba, representing Rivers South-West Senatorial Zone. Having ran into the robbers, the senator found himself in the crossfire. His personal assistant was hit by bullets and died while the senator, his driver and orderly managed to escape albeit, with various degrees of wound.
Apparently furious over a failed outing, the fleeing robbers reportedly descended on some vehicles parked at Ndoki Estate as they perforated them with bullets and burnt others before escaping through the water ways.
Checks by Daily Sun revealed that no fewer than eight vehicles were either burnt or damaged by the invaders.
Residents in the estate refused to comment about the incident.
