Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will next week take a final decision on the party's presidential ticket for the 2007 elections. This was the highpoint of a meeting of PDP governors, which held in Abuja on Wednesday, at the Akwa Ibom State Governor's Lodge.

Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose was also picked as chairman of the Governor's Forum to oversee the process leading to the selection of a PDP presidential candidate from among the governors.
Wednesday's meeting came on the heels of a decision reached at the meeting of the national caucus of the party last week that the governors should produce five names among them for the presidential ticket. Fayose told newsmen after the meeting that the governors would ensure that a credible person emerges to rule the country.

'We met simply to chart a way forward in terms of taking into consideration the interest of all on the issue of the Presidency and the forum appointed me as the chairman to look into it," Fayose stated. He said that governors are 'simply of the view that the meeting should adjourn and people should meet in their various constituencies to carry their people along and thereafter we will meet next week Thursday and take a decision."

He continued : 'As leaders of the country, we want to play a major role in the decisions and recommendations on the type of person that should lead our country. The issue is to consult widely and not to limit it to ourselves alone."

Governors of Ondo, Ekiti, Bayelsa, Kaduna, Bauchi, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Ebonyi, Kwara, Oyo, Akwa-Ibom, Enugu and Nasarawa states were present at the meeting.
