FAAN security chiefs sacked

The director of aviation security at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Capt. Balarabe Usman, has been sacked over alleged involvement of airport security officials in drug deals.

The director of aviation security at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Capt. Balarabe Usman, has been sacked over alleged involvement of airport security officials in drug deals.

Officials of the security department were accused of conspiracy and aiding drug traffickers at the airport.

Usman, whose immediate sack was reportedly ordered by President Olusegun Obasanjo, went down with one of his subordinates in the Aviation Security Directorate, Capt. Bello Ochega (retd).

A statement, on Thursday, signed by Mr. Mike Nwokoro, the chief press secretary to the aviation minister, said the termination of the appointment of the duo followed the report of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in respect of conspiracy and abetting of drug carriers by security officials at FAAN.

Nwokoro said that some aviation security officials were caught by the newly installed close circuit television conspiring, aiding and abetting hard drug carriers by facilitating the circumvention of security procedures.

According to the statement, the role of the two officials in the mess is still being investigated as President Obasanjo has directed the aviation minister to intensify efforts to clean up the directorate.
