South African President, Mr. Thabo Mbeki, has hailed President Olusegun Obasanjo's call for national reconciliation in the aftermath of the National Assembly's rejection of the proposed constitutional amendment, describing the act as inspirational not only to Nigerians but Africans as a whole.

Mbeki, had in a letter he sent to President Obasanjo on Tuesday, described his call for reconciliation as 'an outstanding act of statesmanship" that indicates that African leaders are ready to empower the peoples they serve by allowing them to participate under true democracy.
The South African leader also counseled that President Obasanjo's call for true reconciliation should not be targeted at the PDP only, but should serve as a working instrument to all leaders in Africa as they become more determined to respect the wishes of the people and move the whole continent forward.
He also praised President Obasanjo for urging members of his party to accept the decision of the National Assembly as 'a victory for democracy" and for urging all Nigerians to 'heal the wounds of acrimony and march forward together.
'With no reservations whatsoever, I would like to thank and salute you (Obasanjo) for these comments as you responded to the decisions of the Nigerian National Assembly.
'The comments communicate an outstanding act of statesmanship that I am convinced must and will inspire all Nigerians, our own people and our brothers and sisters on the rest of our continent, as we all strive to empower the masses of our peoples democratically to participate in their own systems of governance," he further pointed out.
