Community leaders in southern Nigeria say security forces shot dead at least two protesters at an oil export terminal operated by U.S.energy giant ChevronTexaco.
Villagers from Ugborodo, near the southern oil city of Warri, stormed the Escravos terminal Friday to protest against the lack of development in their village and demand jobs at the terminal.
Village leaders say the protest was under way peacefully when the Nigerian military opened fire on the group.
Chevron Texaco confirmed that security forces had intervened, but would not comment on whether or not anyone had been killed.
Communities in southern Nigeria frequently hold protests against oil companies and the Nigerian government, which they say take an unfair share of the oil wealth in the region.
