PORT HARCOURT - CONTRARY to speculations that the South-South People's Assembly (SSPA) would announce its presidential candidate for 2007 at the end of its two-day meeting which ended in Port Harcourt yesterday, the group opted to support all those from the region seeking the office.
The SSPA in a statement said since the forum was not a political party, it lacked the will to adopt a presidential candidate. It, however, pledged that it would reach out to registered parties in the country on the need to field their presidential candidates from the region.
It said: 'That the South-South People's Assembly is not a political party and can, therefore, not name its presidential candidates. However, the South-South People's Assembly shall as a deliberate policy approach all registered political parties to put the case of the South-South zone forward and encourage the political parties to field men and women of South-South origin as their presidential candidates.
'The South-South People's Assembly supports all the aspirants who have so far indicated their interest to run for the office of president and those who in the future will join the race and who are of South-South origin"
It constituted three committees towards actualising the dream. They are political, publicity and reconciliation committees. It lauded President Olusegun Obasanjo for conceding to the position of the National Assembly on the debate on the constitution, saying it reflected the spirit of popular democracy.
