Cracks in 2007 Movement

A crack seems to have emerged in the anti-third term camp, the 2007 Movement, the group of lawmakers that spearheaded the campaign against tenure elongation in the National Assembly.

A crack seems to have emerged in the anti-third term camp, the 2007 Movement, the group of lawmakers that spearheaded the campaign against tenure elongation in the National Assembly.

Daily Sun learnt at the weekend that one of the groups within the movement had kicked against using the movement for presidential interest of a region.

Confirming the development, Alliance for Democracy [AD] Leader in the House of Representatives, Hon Wumi Bewaji said that it was true that some members in 2007 Movement are working for some presidential aspirants, but that there was no way the group could be used to oil the political machineries of anybody.

"It is true that some of our prominent members are basking in the euphoria of our victory against tenure elongation and are promising their political godfathers that are warming up for the presidential race. The fact is that the movement was not formed to launder anybody's image, so we shall resist such move," he said.
Bewaji, one of the brains behind the 2007 Movement said that in the situation whereby the platform established for the purpose of crushing the third term agenda was to be used for another thing, members of his party that remained loyal to the end would pull out.

"AD caucus in the House never betrayed the course of which the movement was founded, We were loyal to the end, but in the case that somebody would want to exploit the goodwill of the movement for the presidential interest of somebody, we will have no option than to pull out of the movement," he declared.

The AD leader admitted that most members that identified with the movement did so because of one interest or the other, but added that it was enough to subjugate the interest of others.
For instance, we have the interest of the vice president, General Ibrahim Babangida, the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) presidential candidate, General Buhari and Northern entity as propelling factors.
