Oil giant Shell again has been again has been obliged to pay $1.5bn to Nigerian residents by the Nigerian court.

The high court had given Shell until 1200 local time (1100 GMT) on Monday to pay the fine. Shell has appealed against the court and said it wouldn't not comply until the appeal is heard.

The ruling against a Shell subsidiary was to compensate the Ijaw community for environmental damage in the region.

Meanwhile, Ijaw militants say they will step up attacks on oil installations. The groups want more of Nigeria's oil wealth to benefit local communities.

Four groups - the Niger Delta People's Volunteer Force, the Coalition for Militant Action in the Niger Delta, the Martyrs Brigade, and the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta - said they were forming a coalition to step up their opposition to the government.
