A Nigerian 'blinded by love" for a Singaporean woman was jailed for 18 months for sneaking into the city-state three times despite being caned and banned, news reports said on Tuesday.

SINGAPORE - A Nigerian 'blinded by love" for a Singaporean woman was jailed for 18 months for sneaking into the city-state three times despite being caned and banned, news reports said on Tuesday.

Okechukwu Sages Nwoke, 29, pleaded guilty in court to defying the ban and making false statements to immigration authorities, The Straits Times reported.

Lawyer Darshan Purain requested leniency on Monday, contending his client was 'blinded by love and by his marriage."

An unidentified Singaporean married Nwoke in Nigeria in March last year before returning home.

Nwoke was jailed four months in December 2003 and caned four times for illegal entry, causing hurt and using force against a public servant.

He was repatriated to Nigeria in March 2004, the report said.

Three months later he was back in Singapore using a passport with a different name and was issued a 30-day social visit pass. He returned on another passport in September that year.

He returned in September last year and was nabbed on March 14 this year when he tried to extend his stay.
