AD is dead -Falae

The Alliance for Democracy (AD) appeared Thursday to have been confined to the dustbin of history as its presidential flagbearer in 1999, Chief Olu Falae, described it as a stranded party that has no future.

The Alliance for Democracy (AD) appeared Thursday to have been confined to the dustbin of history as its presidential flagbearer in 1999, Chief Olu Falae, described it as a stranded party that has no future.

Falae told reporters in Lagos that the party for the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, is the newly formed Democratic Peoples Alliance, of which he is the protem chairman.

"Afenifere is going into the Democratic Peoples Alliance," he said. "It took us six months to make the decision."

He explained that the AD is stranded in the court and it's only existing in name alone. He added that the party could not be used "as long as INEC refuses to recognise any of the factions of AD. It is stranded and elections are coming, we can't put the carrier of all AD people in jeopardy, that's why we need a new platform."

Explaining why he had refused to go with ACD, Falae said his group formed the DPA with other groups because they didn't want to be part of an opportunistic gang up to capture power.

And when he was reminded that the Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and some AD governors who were defeated in the last elections are now in ACD, Falae said: "Not all former governors were Afenifere. They've said they didn't believe in it. They have gone to join a party, but we have formed a party. We know where we're coming from and where we are going. They don't know where that party is coming from."
