The manager of the Trade Bank in Yenagoa allegedly turned Ben Johnson Monday after tempers heightened and civil servants under the employ of the Bayelsa State government appeared restive. The civil servants mostly from the state sports Council and Sanitation Authority who collect their monthly salaries from the banks had stormed the Trade Bank in to demand the payment of their January salaries.
They learnt, the Telegraph gathered, that their salaries had been paid since last week. The bank's premises was a beehive of restive workers who had waited endlessly for the payment of their salaries without any positive sign from the bank.
Apparently due to shortage of funds, the bank could not meet the payment, leading to speculations in these uncertain times, that the bank may be in danger of going under. Some of the angry workers confirmed they have become frustrated as a result of the bank's antics in payment. In sizing up the mood of the civil servants, the bank manager reckoned things might get out of hand. He reportedly made his move, sneaking out of the bank through the back door as workers called for his head upfront.
It was indeed a pathetic situation Monday and Tuesday, said our man on ground, as the workers refused to leave the bank. A civil servant said he used to patronize the bank but was forced to change his mind aftersuch an agonizing experience
A bank official however, told the angry workers that they should not be discouraged as the bank is working to rectify the anomaly.
