Immigration relaxes rules for issuing visas


Apparently to enhance the country's tourism sector, the Nigeria Immigration Service has said that intending tourists and businessmen will no longer require "letter of invitation" from their host or sponsors to enable them obtain visas.

Apparently to enhance the country's tourism sector, the Nigeria Immigration Service has said that intending tourists and businessmen will no longer require "letter of invitation" from their host or sponsors to enable them obtain visas. A statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja and signed by a Chief Superintendent of Immigration, Mr. Ekpedeme King, said that the Minister of Internal Affairs, Ambassador Magaji Muhammed, had approved the new measure.

It added that the removal of the "letter of invitation" which was one of the conditions for obtaining visiting, tourists or business visas from high commissions and embassies was no more needed. The statement added that the Comptroller General of Immigration, Mr. Chukwurah Udeh, had assured Nigerians and the international community that the NIS would continue to introduce necessary reforms in the sector.

It stated that the efforts was aimed at making the country a preferred destination for foreign destination for foreign direct investment and tourism as well as meet global best practices in migration management.

In a related development Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has enjoined African leaders to work towards the removal of all restrictions to movement of people and trade within the continent.
