The newly acquired Presidential jet, a Boeing 737-800, made its first trip to Lagos Sunday when it flew in Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and his entourage, who were on their way to Ota, Ogun State.
The brand new aircraft, marked 5N-FGT and wearing the national colours, has the inscription, Nigerian Air Force, boldly written on it.
Obviously, the plane will be replacing the B727 jumbo jet since it has the serial number 001 around its nosewheel.
The wide-bodied aircraft, one of the latest in the B737 series and equipped with excellent noise reduction mechanism, arrived the Presidential Lounge of the Murtala Muhammed Airport at about 2:15 pm.
The aircraft, according to experts, has sound satellite navigational facilities, which makes it the toast of big international airlines. Its maximum range is 3,060 nautical miles (5, 665 km), while the typical Cruise Speed (at 35,000 feet) is 530 mile per hour.
On landing, all military cum police officers defiled the rain as they stood with mouth agape watching the splendour of the new plane. Not left out in the spectacle were workers at the Presidential lounge who trooped out to watch the aircraft taxi to a stop.
The President refused to talk with reporters as he walked briskly into the waiting helicopter.
