The Federal Government , the 36 state governments, and the 774 local government councils across the country have collectively received about N16 trillion from the federation account between 1999 and 2005.

The Federal Government , the 36 state governments, and the 774 local government councils across the country have collectively received about N16 trillion from the federation account between 1999 and 2005.

The money, according to a document prepared by the Federal Ministry of Finance, revealed that the three tiers of government received the funds between June 1999 when the President Olusegun Obasanjo administration came into office and December 31, 2005.

An analysis of the document indicated that while the Federal Government received N5,137,522,032,390.38, states and local governments received a total of N10,671,162,370,994.10 within the same period.

The document titled, Detailed Breakdown of Allocations to Federal, States and Local Governments: June 1999 to December 2005, was prepared as part of the ministry's Transparency in Action programme.

The allocation that accrue to the Federal Government include statutory revenue allocation, value added tax, excess crude oil proceed and other additional allocations which include stabilisation allocation, GSM licence proceeds, and draw down from reserve.
In her preface to the document, Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said it is a practical expression of accountability and transparency.

Zonal breakdown of the allocation showed that the South-South zone has received the highest allocation of N1,259,349,337,581, followed by the North West with N627,887, 924,953, while the South West received a total of N550,525,715,451, North East N458,194,734,800, North Central N425,398,456,878 and the South East got the least with N374,502,676,653.

The document further revealed that Delta State has received the highest allocation of N321.002 billion from the federation account, followed by Rivers and Bayelsa states with N286.395 and N259.882 respectively, while Ekiti, Nasarawa and Plateau states got the least allocation of N61.471, N60.967 and N52.530 respectively.
