Area Boys on the rampage in Lagos

No fewer than 10 persons were seriously injured in Lagos Monday, when street urchins went on the rampage in the Ikosi-Ketu area setting over 30 shops and a house on fire.

Police said two rival groups were behind the chaos which began at a party, where two musicians called Princess Tope and Local Lagbaja were performing.

Daily Sun gathered that trouble started on Sunday at about 11p.m, when Princess Tope, who was brought by a group of street urchins known as Market Area Boys, began to sing the praises of another group called Palace Boys from the Ikosi palace area.

Claiming that they paid the piper and must dictate the tune, the Market Boys kicked against Princess Tope's action and the move caused a bloody free-for-all-fight in which machetes and broken bottles were used.

Besides several people that were injured, the fight ended on Sunday with a Mercedes Benz 230 marked AP 867 KRD vandalised and a building along Ikosi Road torched.

The Palace Boys were said to have returned yesterday for a reprisal attack, setting no fewer than 30 shops, at the Ikosi Local Development Area, on fire. The council secretariat was sacked and broken bottles littered the premises.

The fire brigades were called in to quench the raging inferno as soldiers and policemen, who arrived at the scene by 3.30a.m restored order.
Lagos State police spokesman, Mr Olubode Ojajuni said six suspects had been arrested, in connection with the destruction.
