Nigeria has 21 bids for its majority stake in Nitel


Twenty-one companies had expressed interest in acquiring a controlling stake in Nigeria's debt-laden national phone carrier, Nitel, and its cellphone arm, M-Tel, the country's privatisation agency said yesterday.

Lagos - Twenty-one companies had expressed interest in acquiring a controlling stake in Nigeria's debt-laden national phone carrier, Nitel, and its cellphone arm, M-Tel, the country's privatisation agency said yesterday.

Nigeria, Africa's fastest-growing telecoms market, restarted the process of privatising Nitel last September, two years after its failed $1.3 billion (R7.9 billion) auction to UK-registered Investors International.


In December, Telkom and its cellphone unit, Vodacom, said they would bid for Nitel.

News reports yesterday said that MTN Group and Chinese equipment vendors Huawei Technologies and ZTE were among the suitors.
