A 23-year-old lady cashier on the Lagos Island who pretended to be a devout christian recently showed that appearance could truly be deceptive when she allegedly disappeared with her employer's N800, 000.
Ukamaka was employed in February and by April she disappeared with Mr. Ibeabuchi Ebeh's money.
The Ebute-Ero police station has been notified of the stolen money.
Ukamaka was brought to Ebeh after his former cashier gained admission to the university. Ebeh said he accepted her application and employed her because she came through a member of his church, a brother-in-law to the missing girl.
He has ruled out the possibility that his cashier may have fallen into the hands of fraudsters.
Ebeh said: ' This whole thing started on April 7. She didn't come to work that day and she was with the keys to the drawers. She called at about 12pm, claiming she was having stomach upset, but I didn't take it kindly. I scolded her. She came to office two hours later but she didn't look sick."
He said he collected the keys from her and wanted to sack her but relented when other traders interceded. The following Monday after the incident, Ebeh and his brother noticed that the account was not balanced. Over N1.97 million was unaccounted for.
' My brother questioned her. He told me that as soon as he opened the door, she said that her stomach upset was back. She acted like someone who was about to vomit and collapsed."
Ebeh's brother was said to have rushed out to buy some medicine from a pharmacy in the market but when she returned Ukamaka was gone. He didn't find anything amiss and didn't bother to check the money drawer. When Ebeh came to the market, his brother narrated the morning incident. Ebeh immediately remembered that the key was with the cashier.
' We checked the drawer. It was locked. We decided to break it open. The money left there was gone! N800, 000! I called the man who recommended her. He was shocked by her action, so also was her sister."
Daily Sun learnt that Ukamaka was staying at Abuja, but came to Lagos to stay with her married sister, at Orile Igamu, when she pulled the hat trick. She told them she was about to write an exam and needed a holiday job.
Nobody in Ukamaka's family seemed to know her whereabouts.
