The four Nigeria GSM service providers in the country, MTN Nigeria, Vmobile, Mtel and Glo Mobile, have contributed over N205 billion to the national treasury between 2001 and 2005, Phillips Consulting has revealed.
The four Nigeria GSM service providers in the country, MTN Nigeria, Vmobile, Mtel and Glo Mobile, have contributed over N205 billion to the national treasury between 2001 and 2005, Phillips Consulting has revealed.
Within the same period, the operators generated 133,552 employments in the country, the company disclosed in Lagos at a capacity building programme for media executives sponsored by MTN Nigeria.
The breakdown of the operators' contributions to the national economy shows that they paid N16.35 billion to Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) as levies, N15.23 billion duties on stocks, N27.70 billion as VAT on revenue, N4.14 billion on WHT, N10.79 billion on employee tax, N41.20 billion as duties on equipment and N0.378 billion at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
According to the Phillip Consulting figures, the operators also paid N1.34 billion on stamp duties, N0.35 billion on building permit, 0.07 billion on local government permit, 0.03 as vehicle/hackney permit, N77.41billion on various licences and N0.18 billion on rates and taxes.
Within the period under review, Phillip Consulting also revealed that the GSM operators generated 133,552 employment.
The breakdown of the employment shows that 5,152 were employed as direct staff, 687 are direct dealers, 7, 703 indirect dealers and 120,000 informal dealers.
Three of the GSM operators, MTN Nigeria, Vmobile and Mtel, were awarded mobile licences in 2001 by the regulatory authority, NCC.
Glo Mobile, the mobile arm of Globacom, the second national operator (SNO), began operations in 2003.
