Lawmakers snub anti-third term protesters

Members of the Kano State House of Assembly Tuesday snubbed hundreds of students of Bayero University, Kano who staged a peaceful protest against the alleged third term bid of President Olusegun Obasanjo within the Assembly complex.

Members of the Kano State House of Assembly Tuesday snubbed hundreds of students of Bayero University, Kano who staged a peaceful protest against the alleged third term bid of President Olusegun Obasanjo within the Assembly complex.

But for the matured conduct of the students, the protest would have turned bloody when the lawmakers ordered that the police should force the protesters out of the premises.

Unable to contain the large number of the students, the police stood by and watched while the students made their way into the Assembly chambers without any lawmaker in sight to receive them.
After chanting war songs for a while, the students left the complex in frustration. They, however, condemned the lawmakers for paying lip service to the issue of third term.

"They have been settled but we hear them talk on radio, you think they are telling the truth, politics of poverty and engunje has bedevilled our State House of Assembly; they are only lining their pockets, it is good business for them but we will go back and redraw our plan of action, they can't take us for a ride let the whole world know that the Kano State House of Assembly has been pocketed by the protagonists of third term," spokesman for the protesters, identified as Isah stated on their way out of the Assembly complex.

Efforts to get any principal officer of the Assembly to speak on their refusal to receive the students proved abortive as they were said to be very busy.
The protest march was said to have been organised by Youth Alliance for Good Governance.
