The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has finally raised a panel to try Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Governor Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia State) and Governor Boni Haruna (Adamawa) for alleged anti-party activities.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has finally raised a panel to try Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Governor Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia State) and Governor Boni Haruna (Adamawa) for alleged anti-party activities.
It would be recalled that the party's NEC had, last week, stated that Atiku and the two governors would face a panel for attending a meeting organised by lawmakers opposed to third term.
According to National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Chief John Odey, the disciplinary committee is made up of members of the party's Board of Trustees, headed by Chief Tony Anenih, and National Working Committee (NCW), because Atiku, Kalu and Haruna are senior members of the party. He did not, however, say when the trio would face the panel.
Odey told Daily Sun: 'We already have a disciplinary committee. We honour them to a whole committee of BOT/NWC. Don't forget that they are senior members. The whole world will watch how this issue will be handled. We are sincere and will be transparent in our approach."
Noting that 'no personal ambition greater than party interest should overwhelm (PDP) members," Odey cautioned party leaders to always monitor and subject themselves to scrutiny when necessary.
After last week's NEC meeting, PDP Secretary, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, had stated that party leaders should always mirror and subject themselves to scrutiny when necessary.
Meanwhile, sources close to Governors Kalu and Haruna dismissed the composition of the special panel.
While Kalu, according to the source, may not appear before the panel because he had been technically deregistered in the last revalidation exercise, Haruna reportedly expressed doubts on the impartiality of the panel, saying that there was likelihood of bias on the part of the BOT members because they are in support of third term.
