A road accident invol ving a lorry and a pick- up van carrying Easter revellers yesterday claimed 10 lives at Atlo, 12 kilometres from Otukpo along old Otu-kpo - Enugu road in Benue state.
A road accident involving a lorry and a pick- up van carrying Easter revellers yesterday claimed 10 lives at Atlo, 12 kilometres from Otukpo along old Otu-kpo - Enugu road in Benue state.
The dead were all occu-pants of the pick-up van who were tavelling from Otukpo after attending an Easter retr-eat organised by a church in Ochobo. Six other victims who sustained serious inju-ries are still lying critically ill at the hospital.
However, angry youths from Alto set the lorry ablaze.
The police in Otukpo said their swift response stalled further breakdown of law and order, just as they helped the victims to nearby hospitals.
A resident of Ochobo, Emmanuel Ejembi, told Daily Trust that his younger sister was involved in the accident. Although she survived, Mr. Ejembi said her condition was still critical.
He said the driver of the burnt lorry escaped from the scene of the accident which prompted the youths to set the vehicle ablaze.
