The conjoined twins who were separated at the Aminu Kano Teac-hing Hospital last month have died.
The head of the team of surgeons who carried out the operation, Dr. Sani Alhassan, broke the news to journalists yesterday.
Dr. Alhassan said the first baby died four days after surgery was performed after developing fever while the second baby died 13 days later, adding that the second baby was being breast-fed by the mother 'when he began to vomit.
His heart suddenly stopped beating then we discovered that he had stopped breathing".
He said it could not be immediately determined what happened, but said the death of the twins is a challenge to the hospital.
According to him, the separation of the twins and their eventual death raised, the need for the hospital to acquire sophisticated med-ical equipment to handle such cases in future pointing out that the successful surgery carried out by the hospital for the first time was a feat which indicated the hospital's zeal to meet global challenges in the field of medicine.
The mother of the twins, Malama Aisha Haladu, had given birth to the babies at home but was taken to the Murtala Mohammed Hosp-ital for postnatal care while the babies were referred to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
