Prominent Northern Emirs at the weekend kicked against attempts to elongate the tenure of the Obasanjo administration which expires on May 29, 2007.
Daily Sun learnt that the President had seized the opportunity of the presence of notable Emirs at the turbaning ceremony of the Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Muhammadu Iliyasu-Bashar in Kebbi State on Sunday to meet the traditional rules and seek for their support.
It was gathered that President Obasanjo presented the idea to the monarchs in a veiled manner while he kept hitting on the need to spend more time to anchor his on-going reform programmes.
All the Emirs at the meeting with the exception of the Emir of Zaria were said to have expressed their opposition to President Obasanjo's stay in office beyond May 29, 2007.
To stress their opposition to his candidacy, the Emirs were said to have told him that they would not mind if the President vacates the seat for any candidate from other parts of the country if he would not relinquish power to the North.
They urged him to take the honourable step of opening up the political space for aspirants to sell their potentials and ideas to the Nigerian masses.
The Emir of Zaria was, however, said to have expressed the readiness to back President Obasanjo to continue in office beyond the stipulated exit date in 2007.
