2007 presidency: Ayu leads Atiku's campaign


Former Senate President and three-time minister, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu has been appointed to lead the campaign of Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the office of the President of Nigeria.

Former Senate President and three-time minister, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu has been appointed to lead the campaign of Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the office of the President of Nigeria.

Under the current constitution, the office becomes vacant by May 29, 2007 when President Olusegun Obasanjo would have completed his second and final term of four years. Elections to that office may be only seven to eight months away, going by the new electoral law as passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Vice President Atiku Abubakar announced Ayu's appointment as Director-General on Sunday.
Iyorchia Demenonyo Ayu, noted as a radical politician, was born on November 26, 1950 in Gboko, Benue State. He attended Mount Saint Gabriel Secondary School, Makurdi and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria from 1974-1976.

He was once a Graduate Assistant, Sociology Department, University of Jos; lecturer, Sociology Department and later Head, Sociology Department, University of Jos, 1977-91. He was elected senator 1992-93; Senate president, 1992-93; appointed Minister for Education, 1993-95, Minister of Industry, 1999-2000, former Chairman, University of Jos branch of Academic Staff Union of Nigeria Universities (ASUU), Member, Group 34, Member, Group 18 and former member, Editorial Board, Daily Times of Nigeria 1991-92, He was also former chairman, Radio Benue Corporation and foundation member, Centre for Economic and Social Development, CESP, 1995.
