Galadima okays league start

Chairman of Nigeria Football Association (NFA), Ibrahim Galadima, has okayed the start of the 2006 Globacom Premier League, saying he would be doing so for the sake of the players, coaches, administrators and indeed, many other people, who earn their livelihood from the local league, as well as the football fans, who follow the local league.

Galadima, however, said that he and members of his board were still averse to the election that brought in the league board's chairman, Uyuki Obaseki, as well as their unilateral decision to abridge the league for this season without reference to the FA board.

'What I've said and always maintained was that the league board (NFL) cannot work independent of the NFA," Galadima said.

'They are a body running the league under the supervision of the NFA and they must always pass back their decisions to the NFA board.
'Their decision to abridge the league this season without informing the NFA board is wrong and totally illegal.

'We should insist the league doesn't start this weekend, but for the sake of the players, coaches and administrators, who earn a living from the league, as well as the fans, we (FA board) have no grouse with the start of the league even in an abridged form.
'The decision taken without the NFA was wrong, but like I said earlier, the league can still go on as planned," Galadima concluded.

The Kano State-born administrator, who is still reaching out to the powers that be to have his re-election as NFA chairman sustained, said his board does not recognise the elections that brought in the league board chairman, Obaseki and with the kind of utterances Obaseki has made, it would be difficult working with him.

'The league board came to us with an election guideline last year, which we approved, but they didn't let the NFA supervise the elections like is in the statutes.
'Now, they went on with the election and expect the board to recognize them. I don't think that would be possible.

'The chairman of the league board, Uyuki Obaseki, has been saying so many untoward things about the FA board and yet, he is supposed to be a vice-chairman of the FA according to the statutes.
'Now if the whole controversy surrounding our football is resolved, how does he expect me and other members of the board he has insulted in public to seat with him as an automatic vice-chairman of the board and work with him?" Galadima asked.
'I don't think such a thing would work," Galadima told Nigeriansportsonline.com from Kano.
