Newly appointed Judges receive cars in Rivers


The Rivers State Governor, Dr Peter Odili has approved five new Peugeot 406 saloon cars for each of the newly sworn-in High Court Judges.

The Rivers State Governor, Dr Peter Odili has approved five new Peugeot 406 saloon cars for each of the newly sworn-in High Court Judges.

In addition, extra vehicle were made available to the State Judiciary to ease transportation problems, hampering their official assignments.

Dr Odili made this known during a special dinner organised to mark the 2004/2005 Legal Year at the Atlantic Hall, Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt.
According to the Governor, the gesture is designed to equip the Judges to discharge the functions of their new positions as High Court Judges creditably.

He expressed confidence in the choice and ability of the Judges whom he said are already "adjusting posturally" to the challenges of their new positions, pointing out that God has been merciful and gracious to the state.
The State Chief Executive urged the Judges to join the new crusade of the State Judiciary towards a good justice delivery.

Governor Odili also lauded members of the Judiciary for their various contributions to the success of the Judiciary in Rivers State under the able leadership of the State Chief Judge, Justice Iche Ndu.

He expressed optimism that the on-going seminar for training of staff of the Judiciary on the utilization of the Automatic Verbatim Recorder would afford members of the State Judiciary the opportunity to keep pace with digitalized modern trend judiciary as against the analogue system of recording court proceedings.

Dr Odili particularly eulogized the State Chief Judge for instilling a new spirit of commitment, discipline, enthronement of good sense of judgment and the consciousness of incurring the wrath of the Judiciary for any act of miscarriage of justice.

The Governor observed that the growth and sanity pervading the judiciary was a mark of visionary leadership and re-affirmed government's determination to ensure that the Judiciary in the state remains the last hope of the common man.

Earlier, the State Chief Judge, Justice Iche Ndu said the celebration of the legal year was an annual event in keeping with the tradition of the Judiciary. .

Hon Justice Ndu said the occasion provides opportunity for the members of the Judiciary to come together and reflect on the past and make projections for the future, stressing that it has a global colouration particularly in Great Britain.

Among other dignitaries who graced the occasion include the wife of the Governor, Justice Mary Odili, Deputy Governor Sir Gabriel Toby and his wife, State Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Odein Ajumogobia, the Christian, academic and business communities and top government functionaries.
