Obasanjo reshuffles cabinet


President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday effected a minor reshufflement of the Federal Executive Council as he swore in a new minister, Dr. (Mrs.) Grace Oguche, recently cleared by the Senate as replacement for Dr. Iyorcha Ayu, who resigned his appointment late last year.

President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday effected a minor reshufflement of the Federal Executive Council as he swore in a new minister, Dr. (Mrs.) Grace Oguche, recently cleared by the Senate as replacement for Dr. Iyorcha Ayu, who resigned his appointment late last year.

The new minister, a former school principal who retired from the Federal Civil Service last year was assigned the portfolio of Minister of State for Education.

At the brief ceremony which took place in the council chambers of the Presidential Villa, President Obasanjo announced the redeployment of two old ministers, namely Chief (Mrs.) Helen Esuene and Hajia Halima Tayo Alao.

While Esuene, who until yesterday, was the Minister of State for Health was up-graded as senior minister and moved to the Ministry of Environment, Tayo Alao was reassigned as Minister of State for Health.

Born on August 13, 1952, Oguche holds a doctoral degree in education and is the eighth female minister in the president's cabinet. The others are Dr. (Mrs.) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Mrs. Nenadi Usman, Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili, Chief (Mrs.) Helen Esuene, Hajia Halima Tayo Alao, Hajia Maryam Ciroma and Mrs. Chinwe Obaji.
