Eguavoen: We want to wipe away World Cup tears

A relieved Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen has restated his team desire to go all the way and win the African Nations Cup so as to make up for the country's failure to qualify for the World Cup in Germany.

A relieved Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen has restated his team desire to go all the way and win the African Nations Cup so as to make up for the country's failure to qualify for the World Cup in Germany.

"We disappointed ourselves by not going to the World Cup and the only way we can somehow make up for this is to win the cup," said the former international defender.

Eguavoen said his team were again lucky to come out tops in the penalty shootout against champions Tunisia on Saturday here in Port Said.

"This game could have gone either way. We needed some luck and we got it against Tunisia. The other time in Tunis, the Tunisians had the luck," he said.

Eguavoen also defended his lining up youngsters ahead of such experienced players like Nwankwo Kanu and Garba Lawal.

"I think I have a balance in my team - young players and some more experienced players, who are mostly on the bench. These experienced players sit and watch from the bench and go in later to fix any problems we notice in the game," he explained.
