Contractors handling Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) projects in the nine states of the region have been given a one-month ultimatum to mobilise to site or have such contract terminated.
Managing Director of the commission, Hon Emmanuel Aguariawvodo, who handed down the warning in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital, explained that the warning has become imperative following the refusal of some contractors to move to site after collecting 25 per cent mobilisation several months ago.
Aguariawvodo said out of the 1,223 contracts awarded sometime last year, as many as, 60 have not taken off, adding that the projects affected are mostly roads and bridges.
He said NDDC has started the process of terminating such contracts and would hold banks that guaranteed these contracts responsible.
He advised such contractors to take advantage of the dry season to move to site warning that at the expiration of the grace period of one month such contracts will be terminated.
On youths empowerment and Skills Acquisition, Hon Aguairavwodo said the Commission has achieved a lot disclosing that over 6,000 youth are currently being trained in various skill areas by NDDC.
The NDDC managing director also appealed to militant youths involved in kidnapping and hostage taking to stop the dastardly act as it is not in the interest of the region.
Aguariavwodo said President Olusegun Obasanjo has done so much for the Niger Delta region and appealed for patience and cooperation to enable the President actualise his plans for the region.
