A MOBILE policeman attached to the Kogi State Deputy Governor died in an accidental discharge as the gun of his colleague suddenly went off when the security details were about to retire for the night.
The deceased policeman, whose name was given as Omolowo, was said to have been killed when he and his colleague including some civilians, were reportedly fiddling with the gun, shooting into the air to herald their presence in the Ihima community of the deputy governor, which last week was overtaken by a sectarian clash involving youths and some masquerades.
It was gathered from sources that the policeman prior to the incident exchanged pleasantries with his colleagues and it was while shooting into the air to chase away miscreants hanging around the vicinity that the tragedy occurred.
Confirming the story to journalists, the Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Jimoh Itopa said that the incident, which threw the entire Salawu household, as well as the entire Ihima community, into a frenzy of mourning was instantly reported to the deputy governor.
Regretting the incident, Itopa said it was unfortunate that a very loyal and dutiful officer would die like that.
Police spokesman, Ambrose Ugbokwe confirmed the killing and regretted the development, adding that the policeman responsible for the act had been arrested and detained while further investigation was in progress.
